Happy Leap Year!

Happy Leap Day to you all out there!  Here are a few Leap Year facts to freshen your memory:

Our solar year is 365.24219 days. Since our calendar does not deal in partial days, every four years, we add an additional day to February. Therefore, our calendar year is either 365 days in nonleap years or 366 days in leap years. A leap year every four years gives us 365.25 days, sending our seasons off course and eventually in the wrong months. To change .25 days to .24219, we skip a few Leap Days every one hundred years or so.

This day only comes around once every four years so I figured it’s a cause for celebration.  Here are a few activities to do with the kiddos today:

1.  Make an origami frog that will “leap” around our house.

3.  Make a paper bag frog puppet.

4.  Make Leap Year cupcakes.

Origami Owl Party Appetizers

I hosted my very first Origami Owl party this weekend and it was SO much fun.  (For those of you who missed the original post, click here to read all about it.)  It was so much fun watching everyone decide on the perfect lockets, charms, chains, plates and dangles.  Now, as much as we all loved the jewelry, we all know food is equally as important.  Five of my guests are in a weight-loss challenge so I needed to find healthy, easy and delicious food.  I decided to serve light appetizers (with a kabob theme) and here’s what was on the menu:

Cucumber and Hummus Bites:

1.  Slice cucumber into 3/4″ pieces.

2. Top with a spoonful of your favorite hummus.

3.  Garnish with Paprika or sesame seeds.

Caprese Kabobs:

1.  Place one boconccini and one cherry tomato on a fresh basil leaf.

2. Skewer all with a toothpick.

3.  Drizzle with olive oil and balsamic vinegar.

Antipasto Kabobs:

1. Skewer one slice of pepperoni, one cherry tomato, one boconccini ball and a slice of salami on a toothpick.

Fruit Kabobs:

1. Skewer a strawberry, raspberry, pineapple chunk, honeydew chunk, three blueberries and two grapes on a kabob stick.  Could not be easier.

Brownies:

The brownie mix from Fresh & Easy is delicious!  I’m not much of a baker, but it’s hard to mess these up.  Yum!

Oscar Night!

Oh how I love the Academy Awards!  I would always get so excited to root for my favorite movies and actors of the year.  It wasn’t until just now that I realized why I am so bored during the Oscars this year; my daughter.  Yes, technically she is the root cause.  Due to her presence in this world I have only seen two, yes sadly only two, movies this entire year.  Harry Potter, my choice, and Moneyball, his choice.  Years ago I would have seen at least every movie nominated for Best Picture and almost certainly all the others.  I was a movie fanatic – it was pretty much an every weekend event.  I suppose I still am; probably why I got so excited to tune in tonight, but it is certainly not the same.  But quite honestly, while I sit here, I feel as though I really haven’t missed much.  We’ll eventually see them with Netflix from the comfort of my own couch, with my own snacks, where I can pause for a pee break and where I don’t have to miss tucking my daughter in at night.  So even though I may have no idea what’s going on, I still love the Academy Awards.

Fun Find Friday: DIY Gift Bow

Welcome to the very first Fun Find Friday.  Each Friday I will be posting my favorite trick of the week, so if you have any tricks up your sleeve, I’d love to hear about them!

Today’s is a do-it-yourself gift bow.  There’s something about springtime because as I look at the calendar it seems as though we have a birthday party every weekend from now until eternity.  Now, I love me some parties- they give me an excuse to shop, so I’m not complaining!  But I will say that I despise spending money on gift wrapping.  It’s such a rip!  You budget for a gift, but then you throw in the wrapping paper, bow, tissue paper, box and card and next thing you know you’ve spent an extra $10.  Well, I’m here to help you with one of those things: the bow.  I learned this trick around Christmas and used it for many of our gifts.  I can’t tell you how many people commented on my little trick.  I just knew I had to share it with you (please forgive my horrible pictures).  Here are the steps:

1.  Grab a scrap piece of wrapping paper (preferably a strip somewhere around 5″x8″) and a pair of scissors.

2.  Fold the strip in half hamburger style (that’s the Kindergarten teacher coming out).

3.  Cut 1/2″ slits starting at the “open” side of the paper, leaving about 1/2″ uncut near the fold.

4.  Zoop (for lack of a better term, that’s what my mom called it) the paper with a pair of scissors until curled. Make sure the designed side of the wrapping paper is showing on the outside of the curl.

5.  Fold the folded end up twice — does that make any sense?

6.  Voilá!

7.  Tape your bow on the gift.

Have a Seussical Week!

Personally, I am getting super excited for the new theatrical release of The Lorax, which coincidentally comes out on Dr. Seuss’ birthday, March 2nd!  To get ready for the big release we wanted to give you all some fun things to do with your kids to get  into the Seussical spirit.  If you haven’t done so before, check out the Seussville University  which provides teachers and parents awesome activities for kids of all ages.  It is also a fun interactive site for those kids who want to stare at your iPad all day!

And for an easy peasy way to get that Seuessical Spirit flowing… here are some fun Seussical printables for the kiddos:
