Fun Find Friday – April Fool’s Day

In honor of the year’s silliest day, I’ve made a list of April Fool’s jokes that are sure to make your kids laugh.

  • Unscrew the cap on your faucet and place one or more Crayola Color Bath Dropz in before replacing the cap.
  • Serve their breakfast cereal in mixing bowls and eat with serving spoons.
  • Turn your house upside down the night before – picture frames, baskets, toys, small appliances or even furniture are all fun ideas.
  • Tape the handle on the kitchen sink sprayer down.  This is a classic April Fool’s joke that never gets old.
  • Place a glob of Vaseline on the bottom of the door handle so slippery hands can’t open the door.
  • Buy realistic looking bugs or critters and place them inside your child’s sandwich, yogurt or other snacks.
  • Place a few drops of food coloring in your child’s glass of milk.
  • Serve meals backwards for the day starting with dessert in the morning breakfast in the evening.
  • Sprinkle a little bit of salt on your child’s toothbrush the night before.
  • Place glitter or confetti on top of fan blades and watch it scatter when your child turns the fan on.

What are some of your favorite April Fool’s jokes?

Rhea Lana Consignment Sale

Before I had a child (and realized just how expensive kids really are) I never considered shopping consignment.  I’m a bit of  germaphobe and the word “used” gave me the eeby-jeebies.  Well, Rhea Lana changed my mind.  I discovered this amazing sale last fall and fell in love.  These sales are held throughout the country, so be on the lookout for one near you.  The one here in the Phoenix area is held twice a year, once in the fall and once in the spring.  Lucky for me, the owner of the NW Phoenix store is also a member of my local MOMS Club, therefore I struck gold and was given an early bird shopping pass.  I was a bit nervous it would a drop-down drag-out fight to get any of the “good” stuff, but boy was I wrong.  Everything is well organized, clean and I even scored some brand NEW merchandise.  Check out all of these goodies I got for a mere $58.00!

It’s a bit hard to tell from the picture, but I got a wheelbarrow filled with blocks, a Fisher Price Learn-with-Me Lawnmower, a shopping cart (which will be perfect for all of the play food I bought at Costco last season), a portable booster seat, a brand new pair of Robeez (valued at $25), a pair of little boy’s Crocs (valued at $30), an adorable pair of khaki shoes and a brand new Melissa & Doug puzzle.  I can only imagine what the value of all of this is, but all I know is I feel like I got a steal.  Click here to see when a Rhea Lana sale is being held in your area.  If you are in the Phoenix area, be sure to stop by the sale going on right NOW, details are listed on the picture at the top of this post or click here for more information.

Did that SERIOUSLY just happen?

This evening during the mellow time after our daughter goes to bed and before we end up falling asleep on the couch, I was seriously taken aback.  To be quite honest, I was floored.  It was about 9:30pm and my husband had just finished a little snack of Ritz crackers and cheese.  Out of the corner of my eye I witness him brush the crumbs from his snack off the coffee table directly onto the floor.  As if that wasn’t enough, he then took his hand and brushed said crumbs under our couch.

I couldn’t believe it.  We had seriously JUST had the discussion about how I was trying so hard to keep the tile floors clean because our newly crawling daughter enjoys putting every tidbit she finds in her mouth, be it leaves, dirt or dog food.  I will admit, I went a little nuts, imploring him, “SERIOUSLY, what is wrong with your brain?!?  Why, when you eat snacks, to you revert to a fifth grader?!”  He sputtered out a multitude of excuses such as, “I didn’t know what I was doing” as well as “I really didn’t even notice!”  How can this be?  How can the male psyche litter his own home?  This too, coming from a man that honks at people who throw cigarettes out their window on the freeway.  ”What gives them the right to throw out their trash on the street?!” This is what he barks at me when I tell him he might need to cool it a bit, and yet now he literally just dumped food on our floor.

Although my shock and disgust still prevail, I am pleased to say that I got a free bathroom cleaning out of the deal; needless to say, he also was in charge of sweeping the floors.

Let Me Hold You Longer

As my son’s first birthday fast approaches, I find myself with a mixture of emotions.  I am incredibly proud of the little boy he is becoming, in awe of his ever-changing abilities and in love with him more and more each day.  Yet I have an overwhelming sense of sadness.  How is my little boy already so big?  What happened to the little peanut that slept on my chest and curled up in my arms?  I feel like we’ve already surpassed so many milestones and some days I look at him and think, “he will never be this small again.”  As I put him in his crib at night a small part of me is sad that tomorrow he will be another day older.  Everybody warned me they grow up way too fast and boy is that true.  I read this poem and it hit the nail on the head.  Cherish each and every moment.

Let Me Hold You Longer

a poem by Karen Kingsbury

Long ago you came to me, a miracle of firsts;

First smiles and teeth and baby steps, a sunbeam on the burst.

But one day you will move away and leave to me your past

And I will be left thinking of a lifetime of your lasts.

The last time that I held a bottle to your baby lips

The last time that I lifted you and held you on my hip,

The last night when you woke up crying,

Needing to be walked,

When last you crawled up with your blanket

Wanting to be rocked.

The last time when you ran to me still small enough to hold

The last time when you said you’d marry me when you grew old.

Precious simple moments and bright flashes from your past

Would I have held on longer if I’d known they were your last?

Our last adventure to the park, your final midday nap

The last time when you wore your favorite faded baseball cap.

Your last few hours of kindergarten, last days of first grade,

Your last at bat in Little League, last colored picture made.

I never said goodbye to all your yesterdays long past

So what about tomorrow? Will I recognize your lasts?

The last time that you catch a frog in that old backyard pond

The last that you ran barefoot across our fresh-cut lawn

Silly, scattered moments and bright flashes from your past

I keep on taking pictures, never quite sure of your last.

The last time that I comb your hair or stop a pillow fight,

The last time that I tuck you in and pray with you at night.

The last time when we cuddled with a book just me and you,

The last time you jump in our bed and sleep between us two.

The last piano lesson, the last vacation to the lake

Your last few weeks of middle school, last soccer goal you make.

I look ahead and dream of days that haven’t come to pass

But as I do I sometimes miss today’s sweet precious lasts.

The last time that I help you with a math or spelling test

The last time when I shout that “Yes! Your room is still a mess!”

The last time that you need me for a ride from here to there

The last time that you spend the night with your old tattered bear.

My life keeps moving faster, stealing precious days that pass

I want to hold on longer, want to recognize your lasts.

The last thing that you need my help with, details of a dance,

And the last time that you asked me for advice about romance.

The last time that you talked to me about your hopes and dreams

The last time that you wear a jersey for your high school team.

I’ve watched you grow and barely noticed seasons as they pass

If I could freeze the hands of time, I’d hold onto your lasts.

For come some bright fall morning, you’ll be going far away

College life will beckon in a brilliant sort of way

One last hug, one last goodbye, one quick and hurried kiss,

One last time to understand just how much you’ll be missed.

I’ll watch you leave and think how fast our time together passed

So let me hold on longer, God, to every precious last.

What’s a Serving Size Anyway?

Ever since my daughter began eating solid foods I have done my best to go by the recommended serving sizes for fruits and vegetables.  According to the list from my pediatrician she is supposed to have at least four servings of fruits and veggies a day.  To me, that translated to pretty much try to get one down her throat per meal.  Recently an article in Parenting magazine cleared something up for me that I wish I would have known six months ago!  That is – a serving of fruits/veggies for children is a tablespoon per year of age.  In other words, a one year old’s serving size is simply one tablespoon and it increases to two when they’re two, three when they’re three etc.  At five years old you are safe to use an adult serving size, which is typically about 1/4 cup.  Definitely a good tip to know – and now knowing it maybe it doesn’t seem so hard to get in all those fruit and veggie servings after all!

Fun Find Friday – Sinful Colors Nail Polish

Okay, so this isn’t my typical “Fun Find” but I was so excited about this I knew I had to share it with the world.  Like most of you, I don’t have time to get manicures or even paint my own nails on a regular basis.  I’ve got a busy life and when I’m not chasing after an active baby I’m doing dishes, laundry, picking up toys, cooking or playing Words With Friends — okay so maybe that last part isn’t necessary but it’s how I spend my 5 minutes of peace and quiet.

Anyway, where was I?  Oh yes, that whole being a mom + looking presentable thing.  After watching American Idol one night and seeing a few of the contestants wearing this amazing aqua color I knew I wanted to try it out — supposedly it’s the color of the season.  I’m not usually so bold so this was a bit of a stretch for me.  While I was at Target I picked up a $9 bottle of OPI nail polish.  My frugal husband stood in the aisle and sighed.  I know, I know, $9 for 0.5 fl oz of nail polish does seem a bit steep, but it’s “the good stuff,” right?  After grumbling under my breath I put the OPI back and picked up this $1.99 bottle from the bottom shelf.  Little did I knew this was going to be my new favorite beauty product.  I hate to admit it, but I have to thank my husband (just don’t ever tell him I said he was right).

Normally my manicures last two days, maybe three if I’m lucky.  Even those “no-chip manicures” that are guaranteed to last 2-3 weeks don’t hold up.  I’ve been told I have oily nails, whatever that means.  I’ve tried all of the clear bases, OPI, Essie, top coats, gels and so on.  Nothing works.  ::Cue the angels::  This $2 bottle of polish lasted SEVEN whole days.  I could not believe it.  Sinful Colors is sold at Target and Walgreens, so next time you’re there pick up a bottle and try it out.  I’d love to hear what you think.  If you love it, you can thank me (or my husband) for that extra $7 in your wallet.

Disclaimer:  I am in no way connected to Sinful Colors, I truly just love their product.
