Happy New Year! I bet you can guess one of our Resolutions…

So yes, it seems as though Ties & Tutus has fallen off the planet, but we have excuses, we swear!  Before I divulge all of the reasons it has been MONTHS since our last blog post, let me first say that we hope that all of you had a lovely holiday!  For both Nora and myself it was a wonderful holiday season, where we were excited to see the joy in our children’s eyes as they marveled at lights, presents and of course their new-found friend, Mickey Mouse.

Ties & Tutus has unfortunately taken a back-burner to our intensely busy schedules. I took some crazy pills and decided to have another baby, making me now a mother to two under two.  My second daughter, Elliana is already two months old and it has been rewarding, yes, but at this stage, a bit more on the exhausting side.  Nora has been busy herself, not only running after a toddler, but taking on a position with Origami Owl!  We are thrilled to say that while adding quite a bit to her plate she has been very fortunate in business and has truly enjoyed the experience that has come with joining the company.  We have therefore neglected our lovely blog… when we began we had young babies who napped twice a day; we now have toddlers that run a mile a minute!  We’re lucky if we get in one hour nap at all and when we do, we usually end up napping ourselves…

However, like mentioned, we our hoping to resume our blogging on a (semi) regular basis in this upcoming year!  We wish you nothing but joy, health and happiness in the upcoming year!  Here’s to lucky 2013!

Need a Summer Vacation Lifesaver? There’s an App for that!

So our summer vacations are officially over, and unfortunately we come home to nasty summer temperatures!  Not only did we visit the beautiful San Diego oceans, my daughter and I made the trek across the country to visit my family in North Carolina.  I was a bit of a stressed mom, in fact, you could say borderline anxiety ridden, traveling on a plane for five hours (just me, no husband help) and then going to a house with a huge dog, three sets of stairs, hardwood floors, and no toddler-proofing to speak of.  I knew that my work was going to be cut out for me supervising my rambunctious 15-month-old.

When we got there however, everything seemed to be going great, the plane ride turned out to be pretty painless, the dog didn’t mind getting his tail pulled, the stairs were gated and my daughter was so enthralled by all the new people she didn’t seem to notice all of the knick-knacks she could potentially destroy.  It wasn’t until bedtime that I realized one big problem, her room was upstairs and mine was two floors away down in the basement.  Now you might thing I’m a little over-protective and it’s not a big deal, but as a first time mom, there hasn’t been a night of my daughter’s life that I haven’t been able to hear her sleeping.  I went into full blown panic.  With the time difference we were going to bed at 11:00pm, way too late to run to Target and buy a monitor.  My father tried to convince me that I’d wake up naturally, but he just doesn’t know my sleep habits.  When in a dark room, I can literally sleep for fourteen hours and sleep through a freight train coming in my room.  With no monitor, my kid could cry for hours and I would be in dreamland.

So what does one do when they are panicked?  They text their girlfriends to make sure that they’re not actually nuts; needing that validation.  So I texted Nora, and thank goodness I did because she solved my problem.  Unbeknownst to me there is an app, Evoz, on your phone, that when used in conjunction with another phone, tablet, etc. you can have a perfect baby monitor.  It allows you to hear everything if you want to, or if you don’t, you can turn the sound off and just have it text, call or email you if your baby is crying.  Don’t want to know if they’ve only been crying for a minute?  You can even set the timer to only notify you after 3, 5, or 7 minutes.  I couldn’t have been more relieved!  I went to sleep knowing that I wouldn’t sleep through my daughter’s breakfast.  Knowing that she was safe and sound allowed me to get some much needed rest and know that we were going to enjoy the rest of our vacation.  So, if you’re in a pinch and need a monitor, whether it be on vacation or at home, check out the Evoz app, it works great and I didn’t even mention, it’s FREE for the first two weeks!

Even Bloggers Need Breaks!

It’s summer!  And if you live in Arizona like Nora and myself, that means you are HOT!  We’ve both decided to get out of the heat for a bit and head west to where your clothes don’t stick to your body with a simple five minute car ride!  So, to California we go!  Nora will be spending time in the LA area and taking her 14 month old to Disneyland and I will be going to San Diego and visiting Sea World!  We both couldn’t be more excited for some quality time with our families, new experiences with our kiddos and, of course, to get out of the heat!  Full Mom-reports on our trips when we get back, but until then, have fun and stay cool :)

In the spirit of the Fourth of July, our challenge this week is All-American inspired!  For many families today the Fourth of July has become a holiday all about good BBQ and Fireworks, don’t get me wrong, that stuff is delicious, but what about this year challenging yourself (and your family) to know some of the facts behind the real reason we celebrate the Fourth of July.  For example, some trivia questions to ask yourself – who is considered to be the author of the Declaration of Independence? Or what famous American proposed the idea of becoming independent from Great Britain?  There are so many other fun facts to learn as well as teach your kids, such as, why we celebrate with fireworks, the meaning behind the Star Spangled Banner and so many more!  So, you are challenged to fully appreciate the meaning behind our Independence Day this year in hopes of having truly great and meaningful holiday!  Need a place to start? We’ve got ‘em:

Monday Morning Challenge – Read your way to the Ball Park!

Happy Monday everyone!  Your challenge this week is to make sure that your children’s brains don’t turn to mush over the summer!  The Phoenix Public Libraries are making it easy to do so by providing an awesome incentive –  FREE Diamondbacks tickets!  Kids from birth to age eighteen are able to participate in the program, either by reading themselves or having others read to them.  All participants will receive a voucher for a ticket to a Diamondbacks game – talk about a nice prize for using your brain a bit this summer!  More information about the program can be found on the Phoenix Public Library website.  Happy reading!

Happy Monday! We Challenge you to be In-The-Know!

Happy Monday everyone!  We hope everyone had a wonderful weekend, and for those celebrating, a great Father’s Day!  This week we are challenging our readers to spend a week dedicating themselves, albeit just a little bit, to knowing what is going on in the world.  This challenge is prompted from the fact that many times my husband comes home from work asking me, “Did you hear about so and so…?”  So often my answer is no, and when it is yes, it is usually because I saw it via someone’s Facebook status.  Coming to this realization, I figured I should challenge myself to knowing what is going on in the world around me, even at a very base level.  I certainly couldn’t tell you what the stock market did last Friday and I certainly couldn’t tell you who was on the cover of this month’s Time Magazine.  But I figure, maybe I should know why gas prices have gone down a bit, how the real estate market is doing in my area and what the latest info is in the upcoming Presidential election.

So this week I challenge myself and all of you to spend a mere 30 minutes a day educating ourselves on the goings-on in the world.  Whether that be tuning in to your local news, watching the headlines on CNN, looking on Google news, or sitting down old-fashioned-style and whipping out the newspaper; this week, be in-the-know!  I have a feeling I’ll be amazed at all the stuff that is going on out there, especially the stuff I had no idea about.  Who knows, could make for some interesting dinner table conversation and maybe I’ll know an interesting factoid that my husband will be clueless about for once :)

Fun Find Friday!

I was out to dinner with friends last night and two of my girlfriends were raving about their newest fun find, their Birchboxes.  What is that you say?  Yes, a Birchbox, it’s a little delectable box that shows up to your door once a month with samples of the newest beauty products; lip glosses, bronzers, perfumes and so much more.  For just $10 a month you get your own personalized, yes personalized – you fill out a little survey, of things that you might enjoy.  The most delectable part is that they are typically very high-end products, so not only are you getting fun mail (always awesome) you are getting something that you might consider a little lavish :)  If you are looking for a little way to treat yourself, this is definitely the way to go!  Also would be a thoughtful gift for a friend, and you look like the best friend ever because you get more than one!  If you are looking for more info or want to sign up you can check it out at www.birchbox.com.  Hope everyone is having a fun Friday – and have a great weekend!
