Monday Morning Challenge – Let Your Child Cook Dinner

Well, it’s Monday again.  I know, I know.  Nobody needs the reminder, but do not fret, we’ve got a fun way to start your Monday morning here at Ties & Tutus.  Are you ready for our second Monday Morning Challenge?  This week’s challenge is to allow your child(ren) to cook dinner for the family.  If your kiddos are too young to do this challenge independently, take the opportunity to have them in the kitchen with you, helping in any way they – stirring, measuring, learning, interacting, watching.

At the end of the week we’d love to hear how it went.  Are you raising a future chef?  Did somebody burn the house down?  Were you presently surprised or were you gagging through dinner?  This is sure to be a funny memory for both you and your children.

Alice Cooper’s The Rock at 32nd Street

Living in the Valley of the Sun definitely has its perks.  Lucky for us, we share this city with a number of celebrities who love to give back to the community.  Alice Cooper is one of my favorite local celebrities because of his love for this city and the children who grow up here.  As a former teacher in the Paradise Valley Unified School District, Alice Cooper holds a special place in my heart.  He recently donated a large sum of money to the PVUSD Arts Program.  Not only did he donate funds to continue the program that is always on the chopping block with public education budget cuts, he personally attended a board meeting, giving parents, students, educators and administrators the chance to meet him face-to-face.  Alice Cooper and his wife Sheryl are opening a local children’s and teen center on 32nd Street this spring called The Rock.   This new center will be located near 32nd Street and Thunderbird — my old stomping grounds.  Way to go Alice Cooper!

Go to www.alicecoopersolidrock.com for more information or read below to see what this facility will offer.

Opening Spring 2012, The Rock at 32nd Street Teen Center has been the dream and passion for Alice and Sheryl Cooper and the entire Solid Rock team for the past 12 years. The time has finally come to make that dream a reality. A collaboration of Alice Cooper’s Solid Rock and Genesis Church, The Rock will minister to teens through the music, dance, art, vocational training in sound, lighting, and staging, and fellowship in a new, safe facility. With so many public schools forced to cut vital programs like music and dance due to lack of school funding, The Rock will cultivate a love of the arts to inspire and challenge teens to choose artistic excellence instead of drugs, guns, or gangs. Who knows what amazing performers, choreographers and producers might come from The Rock?

Fun Find Friday – April Fool’s Day

In honor of the year’s silliest day, I’ve made a list of April Fool’s jokes that are sure to make your kids laugh.

  • Unscrew the cap on your faucet and place one or more Crayola Color Bath Dropz in before replacing the cap.
  • Serve their breakfast cereal in mixing bowls and eat with serving spoons.
  • Turn your house upside down the night before – picture frames, baskets, toys, small appliances or even furniture are all fun ideas.
  • Tape the handle on the kitchen sink sprayer down.  This is a classic April Fool’s joke that never gets old.
  • Place a glob of Vaseline on the bottom of the door handle so slippery hands can’t open the door.
  • Buy realistic looking bugs or critters and place them inside your child’s sandwich, yogurt or other snacks.
  • Place a few drops of food coloring in your child’s glass of milk.
  • Serve meals backwards for the day starting with dessert in the morning breakfast in the evening.
  • Sprinkle a little bit of salt on your child’s toothbrush the night before.
  • Place glitter or confetti on top of fan blades and watch it scatter when your child turns the fan on.

What are some of your favorite April Fool’s jokes?

Let Me Hold You Longer

As my son’s first birthday fast approaches, I find myself with a mixture of emotions.  I am incredibly proud of the little boy he is becoming, in awe of his ever-changing abilities and in love with him more and more each day.  Yet I have an overwhelming sense of sadness.  How is my little boy already so big?  What happened to the little peanut that slept on my chest and curled up in my arms?  I feel like we’ve already surpassed so many milestones and some days I look at him and think, “he will never be this small again.”  As I put him in his crib at night a small part of me is sad that tomorrow he will be another day older.  Everybody warned me they grow up way too fast and boy is that true.  I read this poem and it hit the nail on the head.  Cherish each and every moment.

Let Me Hold You Longer

a poem by Karen Kingsbury

Long ago you came to me, a miracle of firsts;

First smiles and teeth and baby steps, a sunbeam on the burst.

But one day you will move away and leave to me your past

And I will be left thinking of a lifetime of your lasts.

The last time that I held a bottle to your baby lips

The last time that I lifted you and held you on my hip,

The last night when you woke up crying,

Needing to be walked,

When last you crawled up with your blanket

Wanting to be rocked.

The last time when you ran to me still small enough to hold

The last time when you said you’d marry me when you grew old.

Precious simple moments and bright flashes from your past

Would I have held on longer if I’d known they were your last?

Our last adventure to the park, your final midday nap

The last time when you wore your favorite faded baseball cap.

Your last few hours of kindergarten, last days of first grade,

Your last at bat in Little League, last colored picture made.

I never said goodbye to all your yesterdays long past

So what about tomorrow? Will I recognize your lasts?

The last time that you catch a frog in that old backyard pond

The last that you ran barefoot across our fresh-cut lawn

Silly, scattered moments and bright flashes from your past

I keep on taking pictures, never quite sure of your last.

The last time that I comb your hair or stop a pillow fight,

The last time that I tuck you in and pray with you at night.

The last time when we cuddled with a book just me and you,

The last time you jump in our bed and sleep between us two.

The last piano lesson, the last vacation to the lake

Your last few weeks of middle school, last soccer goal you make.

I look ahead and dream of days that haven’t come to pass

But as I do I sometimes miss today’s sweet precious lasts.

The last time that I help you with a math or spelling test

The last time when I shout that “Yes! Your room is still a mess!”

The last time that you need me for a ride from here to there

The last time that you spend the night with your old tattered bear.

My life keeps moving faster, stealing precious days that pass

I want to hold on longer, want to recognize your lasts.

The last thing that you need my help with, details of a dance,

And the last time that you asked me for advice about romance.

The last time that you talked to me about your hopes and dreams

The last time that you wear a jersey for your high school team.

I’ve watched you grow and barely noticed seasons as they pass

If I could freeze the hands of time, I’d hold onto your lasts.

For come some bright fall morning, you’ll be going far away

College life will beckon in a brilliant sort of way

One last hug, one last goodbye, one quick and hurried kiss,

One last time to understand just how much you’ll be missed.

I’ll watch you leave and think how fast our time together passed

So let me hold on longer, God, to every precious last.

Homemade Yogurt Drops

As a mom, I know we are always looking for easy and healthy snacks for our kids.  My son is 10-months-old now and loves yogurt and he loves to feed himself.  All of you parents out there can imagine what happens when a 10-month-old baby tries to feed himself yogurt.  It’s not pretty.  He’s also a lover of those freeze-dried yogurt melts that taste like astronaut food, so I figured there had to be a way to make frozen yogurt melts out of Greek yogurt.  Little did I know it would be this easy!
